چکیده
Maintaining appropriate surgical hemostasis is an important component of sound surgical technique and reduces postoperative morbidity and mortality. Intraoperative hemostasis can be achieved by using multiple techniques and hemostatic agents. Factors that must be considered when deciding on an appropriate hemostatic agent include tissue type, characterization of hemorrhage, vessel diameter, and any underlying coagulopathy. The purpose of this article is to review the normal physiologic hemostatic pathways, discuss application of different hemostatic techniques, and provide a detailed description of currently available topical

Featured Technology: Recombinant Thrombin for Surgical Hemostasis
One of the underlying challenges in any surgical procedure is to maintain or regain hemostasis. Classic surgical training reinforces the axiom that careful attention to surgical hemostasis can help reduce blood loss and transfusion and ultimately improve patient outcomes. There are many challenges to hemostasis in the vascular surgery population due to advanced age at presentation, prior proced...
متن کاملPrevalence and Causes of Mediastinal Reexploration for Excessive Bleeding after Cardiac Surgery Procedures
Introduction: Postoperative bleeding in cardiac surgery is not an uncommon complication and can be evaluated with surgical and nonsurgical causes. Although any type of coagulopathy should be treated before, during, and after the surgical procedure, cardiac surgeons should have perfect surgical techniques for step by step hemostasis to minimize blood loss. Material...
متن کاملNew Surgical Technologies Could Facilitate Surgical Hemostasis in Hemophilic Patients
BACKGROUND It's assumed that surgery in haemophilia can be accomplished these days safely. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of new surgical technologies in the perioperative management and outcome of surgical procedures in haemophiliacs. METHODS Two patients with mild haemophilia A underwent surgery (laparoscopic appendectomy and inguinal hernia repair). In both pa...
متن کاملA New Protocol for Determining Intervention with Trans-Catheter Arterial Embolization or Surgical Hemostasis for Obstetric Hemorrhage
Objectives: The aim of this study is to introduce protocols for choosing trans-arterial embolization (TAE) or surgical hemostasis as an initial therapy for obstetric hemorrhage. Materials and Methods: From 2002 to 2011 at our hospital, the medical records of the patients who underwent TAE or surgical hemostasis for obstetric hemorrhage were reviewed to assess the following data: The causes of o...
متن کاملEquine laparoscopy: hemostasis.
Hemostasis must be accurate in laparoscopic surgery because it is vital to extirpative and reconstructive procedures. Even small amounts of hemorrhage can negatively influence the efficiency and safety of any procedure. In addition to physically obscuring anatomic structures, hemorrhage—even modest amounts—can darken the surgical field, reducing reflection of light and, therefore, visibility. D...
